Yikes!!! My Torsion Spring broke on my garage door and woke me up at 2:00am. The noise was very loud. No problem if you know who to call. It all depends on the position of your garage door when it occurs. If you garage door is down when your torsion spring breaks your in good shape. The only thing that could go wrong is if you press your wall button to activate your operator while your spring is broken. This could result in a damaged motor as well as your garage door getting damaged. Without your torsion spring your garage door weighs too much for your operator to handle. So call a garage door repair company immediately and unplug your operator. If your torsion spring breaks while the garage door is up or in motion, then you may end up with you garage door crashing. This usually results in damaged tracks, operator, hinges, rollers, sections, etc. And if there is anything under the door when it crashes it will be damaged. But sometimes you can get away with no damage and just a torsion spring replacement and tune-up. Either way, torsion springs are a better option than extension springs. When an extension spring breaks it could become a deadly projectile.
